At the 2026 Central California Builders Exchange (CCBE) Design Build Competition, CTE was not merely explained, theorized, or debated—it was experienced in living color, sweat, and sawdust. Hosted in dynamic partnership with the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools (FCSS) and Fresno Regional Occupational Program (ROP), and bolstered by the active participation of more than 100 industry partners, the third annual Design Build Competition brought together hundreds of students, educators, and industry leaders.

In 2024, the inaugural Fresno County event launched with just seven construction teams. Operating out of a local asphalt parking lot, students built rudimentary structures under the watchful eyes of early-adopter contractors. Sensing the profound engagement generated by the inaugural event, organizers refused to let the momentum stall. By 2025, the competition expanded its aperture far beyond traditional construction. Recognizing that workforce gaps span every sector of the modern economy, the event integrated pathways for welding, video production, medical sciences, culinary arts, and public services.

The footprint at the Caruthers Fairgrounds expanded accordingly. The asphalt parking lot was replaced by fairground expanses humming with generators, welding arcs, and the organized chaos of professional job sites. The event ceased to be just a "construction competition" and rebranded itself as an integrated career showcase.

The 2026 Watershed Event

By March 2026, the Design Build Competition had achieved full maturation as a multi-pathway educational juggernaut. Education, horticulture, and automotive pathways officially joined the fold, creating a self-sustaining microcosm of the regional economy.

Twenty-one education pathway teams conceptualized, designed, and executed complete career exploration lessons for more than 100 visiting third-graders.

Simultaneously, horticulture and floral students—coached by Elite Private Landscape—redesigned and installed permanent landscape improvements across the fairgrounds. Automotive students tackled advanced diagnostics in the Fresno City College PicoScope Challenge. Medical students managed first-aid and triage protocols, while criminal justice and public services students coordinated simulated construction inspections from the Fresno ROP mobile dispatching headquarters, managed site security, and directed event parking.

Behind the lenses, 21 video production teams operated as embedded journalists, while culinary arts students fueled the entire operation by preparing and serving an average of 750 meals a day.

Alvarez now works under the banner of Dragados Flatiron Joint Venture. Remarkably, she works directly beneath a foreman who knows her career trajectory intimately: Rhonda Ripley, the very industry coach who mentored Alvarez during her high school competition days.

In addition to Alvarez, two other alumni returned to the 2026 event as pre-apprentices with ValleyBuild, stepping directly from the competition floor into high-paying, benefit-rich regional apprenticeship programs.

Three participating students performed so exceptionally during simulated job interviews that local employers offered them employment on the spot, complete with immediate onboarding guidance.

"Their faces reflected a mix of surprise, profound pride, and the quiet, sobering realization that this wasn’t practice anymore," coordinators noted. "They crossed an invisible threshold from students preparing for the future to professionals stepping into it."

Documenting an event of this magnitude requires professional-grade media coordination. Coached by Emmy-winning ABC30 News Anchor Jessica Harrington, the Community Media Access Collaborative, Horn Photo, and other regional media partners, 21 video production teams functioned as embedded multimedia journalists. Moving seamlessly across the sprawling fairgrounds, these students captured the triumphs, setbacks, and human-interest stories in real time, broadcasting the narrative of Central Valley CTE to a regional audience.


Future Outlook: A Blueprint for National Workforce Development

As the United States grapples with a widening skills gap—particularly in the trades, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing—the urgency to scale programs like the Central California Design Build Competition has never been more pronounced.

The success of the 2026 event demonstrates that educational innovation does not happen in a vacuum. It requires an active triad: educators willing to break traditional scheduling and curricular molds; industry partners willing to invest financial capital, equipment, and personal mentorship; and local communities willing to champion alternative pathways to success.
