Yet, despite its proven value, awareness remains a persistent challenge. Across the United States, outdated stigmas and misconceptions continue to obscure the true depth, academic rigor, and transformative potential of modern CTE pathways.

That narrative is rapidly changing, and the epicenter of this shift is found in California’s Central Valley.

At the annual Central California Builders Exchange (CCBE) Design Build Competition, CTE was not merely explained on a whiteboard or outlined in a brochure—it was experienced. Hosted in strategic partnership with the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools (FCSS) and Fresno Regional Occupational Program (ROP), and backed by the active engagement of more than 100 industry partners, the multi-day event brought together hundreds of students, educators, and industry leaders for an immersive showcase at the Caruthers Fairgrounds.

Far more than a standard student competition, the event served as a living, breathing demonstration of what happens when public education and private industry align with shared purpose, high stakes, and a mutual commitment to workforce development. By transforming an expansive fairgrounds into a fully functioning, student-led ecosystem, the competition delivered an undeniable message: CTE is not an alternative, secondary path—it is an essential, high-rigor driver of the modern economy where students do not just learn about the future; they actively build it.


Detailed Chronology: From a Humble Parking Lot to a Multi-Pathway Ecosystem

The Inception (2024)

Following an exploratory visit to the Construction Industry Education Foundation’s Northern California Design Build event, leaders from the Central California Builders Exchange and the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools recognized a distinct opportunity for their own region. They resolved to bring the concept home, launching the inaugural event in 2024.

Operating on pure vision and grassroots grit, that first iteration featured just seven construction teams building their projects out of a modest parking lot. Despite the spatial limitations and small scale, the proof of concept was absolute. The energy, engagement, and immediate validation from industry observers made it clear that this initiative had tapped into a profound regional need. What started small immediately demanded expansion.

The Expansion (2025)

Building on the momentum of the inaugural year, the 2025 event experienced a dramatic scaling up. Recognizing that the Central Valley’s economic landscape relies on a diverse array of skilled trades and professional sectors, organizers expanded the footprint of the competition far beyond traditional construction.

The 2025 showcase integrated dedicated pathways for welding, video production, medical sciences, culinary arts, and public services. Suddenly, the event was no longer just about framing lumber; it was an interdisciplinary arena where multiple career fields intersected, communicated, and collaborated in real-time.

The Comprehensive Showcase (2026)

By March 2026, the Design Build Competition had matured into a multi-pathway colossus spanning four intensive days at the Caruthers Fairgrounds. Education, horticulture, and automotive pathways were seamlessly integrated into the fold, transforming the gathering into a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary showcase of CTE in action.

The scale of the 2026 competition was staggering:

  • Welding Teams: 27 teams fabricated fully functional, heavy-duty 8’x5’ utility trailers completely from raw steel and metal stock.
  • Construction Teams: 23 teams, each paired directly with an experienced industry coach, constructed complex 8’x12’ utility sheds from stacked lumber and raw building materials.
  • Education Pathway Teams: 21 teams designed, prepared, and delivered interactive, engaging career exploration lessons to more than 100 visiting third-grade students.
  • Horticulture and Floral Teams: Coached by elite landscape professionals, students designed and permanently installed extensive landscape improvements across the fairgrounds property.
  • Automotive Students: Competed in the high-stakes Fresno City College PicoScope Challenge, tackling advanced diagnostics and live customer service scenarios.
  • Medical & Public Services: Student medical teams provided on-site first-aid support, criminal justice students coordinated simulated construction inspections from a mobile dispatching headquarters, and public services cohorts managed site security, parking, and large-scale event logistics.
  • Media & Culinary Cohorts: 21 student video production teams documented the unfolding events as embedded journalists, while culinary students prepared and served an average of 750 hot meals daily to participants and mentors.

In a traditional school setting, subjects are frequently siloed: math is taught in one room, woodshop in another, and language arts down the hall. Real-world application is often theoretical.

  • Jennifer Alvarez: Just two years prior, Alvarez was a student at Mendota High School competing in the Design Build event. Now a fourth-period apprentice with the North Coast States Carpenters Union working under the Dragados Flatiron Joint Venture, Alvarez spent her time mentoring teenagers standing in the exact spot she occupied a short time ago. Adding a poetic full-circle moment to her journey, Alvarez was working alongside her foreman, Rhonda Ripley—who happens to be the very same industry coach who guided Alvarez’s team two years prior.
  • ValleyBuild Pre-Apprentices: Two additional alumni from previous competitions returned to the fairgrounds as registered pre-apprentices with ValleyBuild, actively advancing along career pathways ignited during their initial weekend at the event.
  • On-the-Spot Hiring: During the rigorous marketing and communications interview portions of the competition, three standout student participants were offered employment on the spot by visiting employers, complete with immediate guidance on their next career steps. For these young adults, the realization that "this isn’t practice anymore" was written clearly on their faces—a moment of profound transition from student to professional.

These stories underscore a fundamental truth: the impact of the Design Build Competition does not evaporate when the fairgrounds gates close. The professional relationships, technical competencies, and economic opportunities unlocked during those four days continue to compound year after year.


Innovation Across Specialized Pathways

Automotive Diagnostics and Customization

The Fresno City College PicoScope Challenge pushed automotive students far beyond standard oil changes and brake replacements. Working alongside seasoned professionals from 12 local automotive shops and the Central California Diagnostic Club, students tackled complex vehicle diagnostics. Simultaneously, experts from Signature Detailing and Olmy Creations coached students through advanced vehicle wrapping, cosmetic detailing, and live customer service interactions, offering an illuminating window into the multidisciplinary nature of the modern automotive service industry.

Embedded Journalism and Media Production

Documenting a fast-paced, multi-site event requires professional-grade resilience. Coached by Emmy-winning ABC30 News Anchor Jessica Harrington, representatives from the Community Media Access Collaborative, Horn Photo, and other premier media partners, the student video production teams functioned as embedded, frontline journalists. Moving dynamically from the welding trailers to the culinary tents, they captured the raw energy, technical setbacks, and breakthrough moments as they happened. Their compelling digital storytelling did not just document a single weekend; it broadcast the viability and excitement of Central Valley CTE to a regional audience.


Future Outlook: Why This Model Matters Now

As industries across the United States face persistent workforce shortages, widening skills gaps, and an aging demographic of master tradespeople, the need for robust, visible, and highly effective career and technical education programs has never been more urgent.

Initiatives like the Design Build Competition do far more than simply showcase localized student talent; they provide a replicable blueprint for educational reform. They prove unequivocally that when adolescents are provided with professional-grade tools, uncompromising mentorship, and authentic economic opportunity, they consistently exceed expectations.
