That narrative is rapidly changing.
At the 2026 Central California Builders Exchange (CCBE) Design Build Competition, CTE wasn’t merely explained—it was experienced. Hosted in partnership with the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools (FCSS) and Fresno ROP, and supported by more than 100 dedicated industry partners, the third annual Design Build Competition brought together hundreds of students, educators, and industry leaders for four immersive, high-energy days at the historic Caruthers Fairgrounds in California’s Central Valley.
More than just a competition, the event served as a living demonstration of what happens when public education and private industry align with absolute purpose. It transformed theoretical learning into tangible, functioning realities, proving that when young people are handed the tools, mentorship, and autonomy to build, they don’t just prepare for the future—they actively construct it.
Detailed Chronology: From a Humble Parking Lot to a Multi-Pathway Ecosystem
What makes the scale and success of the 2026 event especially powerful is its humble origin story. After visiting the Construction Industry Education Foundation’s Northern California Design Build, leaders from the CCBE and FCSS saw a transformative opportunity for the Central Valley and resolved to bring the concept home.
The Inception (2024)
In 2024, the vision materialized on a modest scale with just seven construction teams. Their builds took shape in a simple asphalt parking lot. It was an unvarnished, grassroots experiment to test whether high school students could manage the pressures of a live, time-constrained construction project under the watchful eyes of licensed professionals.
The Expansion (2025)
What started small quickly evolved. Recognizing the broader spectrum of regional workforce needs, organizers expanded the event in 2025 far beyond construction. New pathways were integrated into the fold, including welding, video production, medical services, culinary arts, and public services. The parking lot gave way to a larger venue footprint, drawing regional attention and cementing the event as a multi-disciplinary collaborative.
The Full-Scale Ecosystem (2026)
By March 2026, the evolution reached a breathtaking new peak at the Caruthers Fairgrounds. Education, horticulture, and automotive pathways officially joined the lineup, transforming the Design Build Competition into a fully functioning, multi-pathway student-led ecosystem.
Every pathway mattered, and every role was interconnected.
- Welding Teams: Twenty-seven teams fabricated fully functional, heavy-duty 8’x5’ utility trailers entirely from raw, unshaped metal stock.
- Construction Teams: Twenty-three teams, each paired directly with an industry coach, transformed stacks of lumber and raw building materials into complex, weather-tight 8’x12’ utility sheds.
- Education Pathway Teams: Twenty-one student teams designed, pitched, and delivered engaging career exploration lessons to more than 100 local third graders, stepping into the shoes of professional educators.
- Horticulture & Floral Students: Coached by Elite Private Landscape, these students took over the fairgrounds, designing and installing permanent landscape improvements that showcased the full lifecycle of landscape design, project estimation, and site management.
- Automotive Students: Participants tackled advanced diagnostics and customer service scenarios during the Fresno City College PicoScope Challenge, working alongside mechanics from 12 local shops.
- Medical & Public Services: Medical students provided critical on-site first aid and health support, while criminal justice and public services students coordinated live construction inspections from the Fresno ROP mobile dispatching headquarters, managed security details, and oversaw event logistics.
- Culinary & Media: Culinary arts students kept the massive production fueled by preparing and serving an average of 750 meals a day. Simultaneously, 21 video production teams—embedded as working journalists—documented every setback, breakthrough, and triumph in real time.

By working side by side with teenagers and educators toward a shared physical objective, employers witnessed firsthand the problem-solving capabilities, leadership potential, and tenacity of the next generation. A Pipeline in Motion

Consider the journey of Jennifer Alvarez. Two years prior, Alvarez was a student at Mendota High School competing in the very same event. At the 2026 competition, she returned not as a student, but as a fourth-period apprentice with the North Coast States Carpenters Union and a certified construction design-build coach. Today, Alvarez is employed by the Dragados Flatiron Joint Venture, working directly under a foreman who knows her story intimately: Rhonda Ripley, the very same individual who coached Alvarez during her high school debut at the Design Build Competition. During the high-pressure marketing and presentation interviews, three participating students were offered jobs on the spot, complete with immediate onboarding guidance. For these students, the transition from classroom theory to professional reality happened in the span of a single conversation.

While construction often claims the spotlight, the true strength of the 2026 competition was its cross-disciplinary integration.
Advanced Automotive Diagnostics
The Fresno City College PicoScope Challenge pushed automotive students far beyond basic oil changes and tire rotations. Partnering with 12 local independent automotive shops and the Central California Diagnostic Club—alongside specialty coaches from Signature Detailing and Olmy Creations—students tackled sophisticated vehicle wrapping, detailing, and complex electrical diagnostics. They interacted directly with "customers," simulating the nuanced interpersonal communication required in modern service management.
Immersive Media and Journalism
The video production pathway operated under the elite guidance of Emmy-winning ABC30 News Anchor Jessica Harrington, alongside partners like the Community Media Access Collaborative and Horn Photo. Functioning as an embedded news corps, these student journalists moved fluidly across the sprawling fairgrounds. They captured the sweat, the frustration of misaligned timber, the joy of a successful trailer weld, and the relief of a completed project. Their broadcasts did more than record a competition; they effectively translated the value of CTE to the wider Central California community.

Across the United States, industries face an unprecedented crisis: a widening skills gap, an aging workforce, and a severe shortage of qualified technical professionals. Plumbers, electricians, welders, medical technicians, and automotive specialists are retiring faster than traditional educational pipelines can replace them.
In this climate, the need for visible, rigorous, and highly effective CTE programs is not merely a local preference—it is a national economic imperative.
